Electronic music pioneers, The Glitch Mob, continue to push the limits of music, performance, and reality.

At the beginning of the month, The Glitch Mob trio of Boreta (Justin Boreta), edIT (Edward Ma), and Ooah (Joshua Mayer), brought their immense setup called “Blade 2.0” to 9:30 Club for back-to-back shows. Despite the rainy weather and a Ticketfly hack, true fans still packed into the venue, knowing this was a not-to-be-missed performance.

True to their new album, See Without Eyes, Glitch Mob designed a show that rouses all your senses. Sure, eyes are a great way to take in the wild visuals — lasers, lights, and their midi controllers, turned to face the crowd.

But this is a show you can see in lots of other ways. The listening experience is seamless, with each member of the group adding their piece from their own space pod on stage. Additionally, you can experience the show though the beats and breaks that pulse through your being. And we don’t want to leave out the senses of smell and taste, but the group did give us a pretty good description of the famous 9:30 Club cupcakes, reminding fans it was almost Ooah’s birthday.

With a big “Happy Birthday!” from the crowd, fans were able celebrate together a few hours early as Josh Mayer turned 37-years-young at midnight. What a treat to celebrate a birthday with this inventive group. Glitch Mob has been making music for a decade (and their own projects going back farther than that), and are only getting more visionary with time.

And for the encore, Glitch Mob threw down an intergalactic battle between the three of them — putting the spotlight for the first time on individual talents for the fun competition. When the battle was done, the winner was clear: the fans at 9:30 Club.

Following their show, fans were excited to hear of their extended fall tour, spanning North America. With 20 more shows, Glitch Mob is likely coming to a city near you.

On the new album, you’ll hear collaborations with new artists like Elohim, who opened for them. She communicated to the crowd mostly through an electronic voice that voiced greetings (“Washington, D.C., let’s get weird”), lyrics (“Kiss someone with your eyes open!”), and positive affirmations (“You’re beautiful”) to fans in a commanding and imaginative show.

Tonight Glitch Mob releases their immersive album experience through a brand new VR adventure. So there you go, these guys are creating new music, new performance experiences, and now, new realities. Check it out when it goes live at 7:00 pm PST. And don’t forget to see with more than just your eyes.
